WHAT IS HORTICULTURAL VERMICULITE?
Horticultural vermiculite is a type of natural mineral that has been processed with massive heat to expand it. It is non-toxic, odorless and sterile. It does not deteriorate or decompose over time. It's very lightweight and sponge-like which enables it to hold water longer. Because of these qualities, it is an ideal material for soil amendment or potting media because it absorbs excess water, helps in better drainage and improves soil aeration.
HORTICULTURAL USES OF VERMICULITE
-
Add vermiculite and coco peat to garden soil for conditioning. It improves soil texture, aeration, drainage and moisture retention.
-
Use vermiculite (alone or mixed with coco peat) to propagate cuttings. Its moisture retention quality improves survival rate and encourages faster rooting.
-
Use vermiculite (alone or mixed with coco peat to germinate) seeds. Since vermiculite is sterile, seeds germinate faster and "damping off" (caused by the presence of fungus and other pathogens in the soil) is minimized.
-
When transplanting, sprinkle 2 tbsps of vemiculite into the hole of the topsoil before inserting your transplants. Vermiculite provides moisture control and prevents the roots from drying out.
-
It can be mixed with potting media or garden soil to improve soil aeration and water clogging· Vermiculite can be used in place of potting mix for starting seeds
-
For seed transplanting or propagation of cuttings, sprinkle vermiculite into the hole before inserting the transplants or cuttings
